Making Scripture Personal
By Jane Andrews
okinawa65@chartermi.net
Perhaps you’ve experienced the same thing I have
at times. I don’t always understand Scripture and sometimes it seems ‘dry’
and impersonal. Over the years, I’ve learned to use some tools when reading
God’s Love Letter to me that have helped strengthen my insight into
Scripture and bolster my relationship with Jesus.
- Before reading God’s Word, always pray and ask the Lord to open up and
make His truths known to you.
- Use different translations to gain a new perspective.
- As you read, put your name or personal pronouns in the Scripture to
personalize it when applicable.
- Highlight words and concepts that touch your spirit and/or convict you
of a change that is needed in your life.
- Write down what the Lord is showing and revealing to you as you read
His Word.
A short time ago I was reading Psalm 19. This is how I might personalize
it.
Verses 7 – 11 from the New Living Translation
The instructions of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul.
The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.
The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are clear, giving insight for living.
Reverence for the Lord is pure, lasting forever.
The laws of the Lord are true: each one is fair.
They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold.
They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the comb.
They are a warning to your servant, a great reward for those who obey them.
My adaptations for these verses could be:
Your instructions, Lord are perfect, reviving my soul.
Your decrees, Lord are trustworthy, making me wise.
Your commandments, Lord are right, bringing joy to my heart.
Your commands, Lord are clear, giving me insight for living.
Reverence for you Lord is pure, lasting forever.
Your laws, Lord are true: each one is fair.
They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold.
They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the comb.
They are a warning to me, a great reward when I obey them.
May reading Scripture become more and more meaningful as you ponder and
take to heart God’s Love Letter to you.
