Visiting

Last month a friend of mine announced she was moving to a town downstate near her daughter and son. This friend had lost her husband a couple of years ago and had been living alone in her home. Her family felt she should move closer to them so they could be helpful to her with her failing health. It had been a difficult decision as all her friends were here but she did see her need for help. This was a lady who I had promised to visit but kept postponing it knowing that someone else was visiting her every week or so, and she would not miss me for a while. Now a precious friend was leaving and my intention s were unable to be fulfilled as easily as going the 10 blocks to her home. There are so many people in our church who need a call or a visit just to say hello and that we care. It reminds me of a story.

Once upon a time there were four individuals named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.

There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it. But, Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Somebody got angry about it, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, and Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody and Nobody did the job that Anybody could have done in the first place. At last report, these four individuals were still arguing and the job they were supposed to do still was not done.

Do you know someone who is elderly, ill, a single parent and/or unable to get around and about? Have you called or visited to offer caring and help? Jesus asked Peter if he loved him and when Peter said “yes, I love you” Jesus said “feed my sheep” ------------“Follow Me”. This is from John 21:15-19.

Let us not be the Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, or Nobody. Let us be intentional and visit the sick, elderly, the prisoner, the single parent, the new parents, the new visitors or members. Let us be the church of Jesus Christ with open doors, open hearts, open minds, and helping hands!.

John 25:31-46
